Filing a Complaint in Texas

If you have concerns about a licensed psychotherapist or other behavioral health professional in Texas, you may file a complaint with the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC), the state agency that licenses and regulates therapists.

Who may file:  Anyone - clients, former clients, family members, or the public.

How to file:  Complaints must be submitted on BHEC's official complaint form and sent by email or mail to the BHEC Enforcement Division.  Assistance is available through BHEC's toll-free complaint line.

Time limits:  Most complaints must be filed within five years after services end.  Complaints involving sexual misconduct may have extended deadlines.

What to include:  A brief description of what happened, relevant dates, names, and any supporting documents.  Signing the form allows BHEC to review and investigate the complaint.

What happens next:  If the complaint is within BH'eC's authority, a case is opened, the licensee is notified, and an investigation may occur.

Confidentiality:  Complaints are confidential by law.  Anonymous complaints are accepted but may limit investigation and updates.More information and forms:  https//bhec.texas.gov/how-to-file-a-complaint/
